For some weird reason, I've been into making bentos recently. After staying in
Japan for 7months, I finally gave up my instant noodles-only lifestyle and
went to the supermarket to buy oil, soy sauce, salt and other stuff that are
required for cooking. My kitchen and fridge are so well-stocked now~
Brought bento to school everyday since last Thursday and on the first day that I brought a bento, I basically shocked everyone who ate lunch with me.
"Wait, you can cook?!"
"What happened to you?!"
"Are you sure you're Jiahui?"
I've been telling everyone that I cant cook since I came here last October. That's actually true in both ways. Firstly, I only had instant noodles and no oil so I couldnt cook even if I wanted to. Secondly, anyone can cook...It's just a matter of whether the food tastes good or not. The food that I make is obviously edible but taste-wise, I'm the only one who can probably stomach it. Anyway, here's what I've been making this week.
20th May 2010, Thursday
Main: Yakisoba that looks really disgusting in this photo. It was actually a little disgusting in reality because I added a little too much oil. Bleh.
Sides: Tamagoyaki, Enoki sprinkled with pepper, Spinach and Onions, Fried Potatoes
I only have a round frying pan here and while it's still possible to make tamagoyaki, I always end up with pointy ends. I miss my square pan back in Singapore!

24th May 2010, Monday
Main: Nothing because I have no rice cooker nor rice at home.
Sides: Mashed potatoes with melted cheese, Spinach, Enoki, Tamagoyaki
I only had the same ingredients at home so I could only use the same stuff.

25th May 2010, Tuesday
Main: Rice I bought from the school canteen.
Sides: Mashed potatoes with cucumbers and tuna, Chikuwa sauteed with mushrooms, Tamagoyaki, Cherry Tomato, Brocolli
I like this bento best up till date, taste-wise and visual-wise.

26th May 2010, Wednesday
Main: Fried rice with ham. Wanted to make yaki-onigiri but I kinda failed so I turned it into fried rice.
Sides: Croquette left over from dinner, Tamagoyaki, Cherry Tomatoes, Cucumbers
Everyone was like "Wow, sugoi!!! How did you make croquette?" and I was like "Erm, I bought it from the supermarket...leftover from dinner."
"Okay, I take back the sugoi part."

27th May 2010, Thursday
Main: Rice.
Sides: Tamagoyaki with tuna(I need to change the egg menu), Mashed potatoes with cucumbers and tuna(yes, I have too much tuna at home), Cherry Tomatoes, Misoyaki Chicken
First attempt at cooking meat!!! Turned out pretty good...a little salty because I added too much miso but still delightful if you like salty stuff. Bad part about cooking using miso is that miso burns damn fast and it was helluva tiring washing the frying pan.
Comments I got regarding this bento included "You bought this from the supermarket and just placed it in the bento right?" and "Who did you pay to cook for you?"....wtf.

I'm kinda addicted to making bentos now...shit. Why am I turning all domesticated???!
